Senator Jones's Medical Exemption Bill On Reconsideration- SB 1377 Is Not Dead
Dear PERK Supporters,
There is inaccurate and harmful information being shared online and other platforms regarding SB 1377. It is unhelpful, untrue, and divisive. We are allowed to share with you the following critical information. First, and most importantly, the bill is NOT dead. It received a 3-4 vote and did not pass in the Health Committee AND it still may be up for "reconsideration" at the next Senate Health Committee meeting this Wednesday, April 22nd. SB 1377 is not dead and it needs our prayers to continue.
Anyone who truly understands advocacy knows the votes are determined before the hearing not during it. We knew the expected result beforehand. People are not aware of what has happened over the past 7 days or what forces provided empty promises while also working against us. We won't share unless we have permission to do so.
As the lead sponsor of this legislation, we have dedicated over two years of rigorous work to its development. The timing of the coalition that brought this bill to fruition is nothing short of extraordinary—a sentiment shared by my team, our colleagues in the Senate, and their respective staffs. Furthermore, the announcement of support from our Democratic co-authors was strategically coordinated to occur at the earliest possible opportunity.
At the hearing, lead Author Senator Brian Jones gave excellent opening and closing remarks and presented the issue. Bi-partisan supporting Co-Author Senator Dave Cortese also gave excellent opening and closing remarks.
We will keep you informed on anything you can do the next 48 hours.
Sincerely,
Amy Bohn
PERK President
