Negotiations Happening Now: How to Best Support SB 1377

Dear PERK Members,

In a rare moment, we need you to wait on whether or not to join us at the Capitol. We are here now, and there are active negotiations happening regarding SB 1377. Here's the issue: sometimes the health freedom movement attends hearings and speaks in passionate but angry, threatening, and poorly behaved ways. You need to know that the reputation of the "movement" can lead to the opposite outcome of what we hope to accomplish. I get it. I've been at the hearings dating back to SB 277 and SB 276. I'm a mom too, and I have been directly impacted by these laws and have seen their devastating impact. However, when people yell into the microphones, or tell committee members they are evil or have "blood on their hands," it changes nothing. In fact, sometimes it can make hesitant committee voters change their vote against the crowd as a direct reaction.

First, if you are already planning to attend, you must respect the process and the hearing, and respectfully give your support. Do not give any member any reason to vote against us.

Secondly, the next 24–48 hours are crucial. We NEED more letters. You can still send them in. Organizations, please promote this action however you deem necessary to your stakeholders. We need more official position letters submitted in support of SB 1377. SB 1377's next stop will be the Senate Business, Professional, and Economic Development Committee. Address your letters and the subject to the Senate Business, Professional, and Economic Development Committee.

I want to express again that we need all hands on deck. Follow the instructions to submit the letter through the advocacy portal above. We have a unique opportunity to unify in California on behalf of families, children, and physicians.

The Senate Health Committee hearing on SB 1377 (Jones) is on Wednesday, April 15th at 1:30 p.m. in Sacramento, CA.

Given the challenging years related to medical exemptions, discrimination, and the targeting of doctors, this is an opportunity for needed change.

There are so many moving pieces right now. Please stay focused on our action alerts. There is not another organization or group as intertwined in this bill as we are. Some groups are creating confusion. We are the direct lead contact for the Senator, his team, and all matters related to the bill. Right now, there are negotiations taking place. Please follow our lead.

I'm telling you exactly what we need each moment we need it. Send in your letters, your emails, and make your phone calls. Get your official position letters in so they count for the Business Committee. Please keep them coming. We continue to invite everyone to join us in this effort, unified.

Sincerely,

Amy Bohn
