92% of Firefighters Support Medical Freedom Protections, 91% Say Mandates Were Inappropriate

California Firefighters Speak Out: A PERK-Funded Survey Reveals Overwhelming Support for Medical Freedom

Dear PERK Members,

In partnership with Firefighters for Freedom, who graciously gave PERK permission as a trusted organization to poll their stakeholders, PERK launched a key survey among approximately 5,000 firefighters in the state of California. The results were overwhelming. The vaccinated and the unvaccinated alike want medical freedom.

The PERK-funded survey paints a powerful picture of how COVID-19 vaccine mandates affected firefighters across California. According to the survey, 89% of respondents were CPF members, 92% supported legislation to protect freedom from medical discrimination and prevent further mandates, and 91% believed the mandates were inappropriate. In addition, 88% said they were mandated to receive the vaccine as a condition of employment, and more than 48% said they were forced to comply with vaccination in order to keep their jobs.

The survey also revealed serious consequences for those who sought exemptions or challenged the mandates. Among firefighters who filed for vaccine exemptions, 29% reported that their exemptions were denied, while 24% said their exemptions were granted only after appeal. Another 23.32% said they were terminated or placed off duty as a result of a denied or revoked exemption request. Of those who were terminated or suspended, 22% felt their FBOR and due process rights were violated.

Beyond job status, many respondents described a culture of discrimination and hardship. More than 55.28% of those who were forced to disclose their vaccine status said they experienced negative treatment or harassment because of others’ perceptions of that status. Survey results showed that the mandates contributed to a diminished workforce and left many firefighters with feelings of harassment and moral injury.

Because of your support, PERK has allocated resources to ensure high impact. We thank our partners at Firefighters for Freedom for leading on this issue in tremendous ways. You set a standard of leadership and held the line when few others were willing to do so in the beginning. Your courage and determination will always be remembered. You set the example for others, and now the results speak for themselves: California firefighters want medical freedom. The tide continues to shift in our favor when everyone does their part. Never underestimate what a few people can do to eventually change the world.

Sincerely,

Amy Bohn

PERK President
